ADULT MENTORING

The First Steps, a program of the Athens Area Child Abuse Prevention Council, needs volunteers to provide emotional support, parenting education, and information on community resources to new parents. To sign up, call (706) 546-9713.

Breast Cancer Survivors are needed to be Reach to Recovery volunteers. Reach to Recovery is an Amercian Cancer Society program where trained breast cancer survivors are mentors to newly diagnosed women with breast cancer. The Even Start Family Literacy Program needs volunteers to provide GED and ESL (English as a Second Language) tutoring for parents and children, also need childcare volunteers for children 6 weeks to 4 years. AGING MATTERS

GeorgiaCares seeks volunteers to help educate seniors about the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Volunteers will serve at local pharmacies, distributing information and answering questions. Training will be provided. Please contact Kristin Barge or Melinda Walker at (706) 549-4850.

The Adult Day Care Center needs volunteers to provide companion services, including reading, to the elderly and disabled.

The Athens Community Council on Aging is looking for individuals to provide administrative support, help with fundraising, and assist with services such as the Foster Grandparent program and the Independent Living Coalition.  The Council on Aging also operates 16 meal routes daily in Clark County. It takes at least 80 committed volunteers a week to ensure homebound clients receive a hot meal. Volunteers are also needed in the event a regular volunteer is unable to do his/her route. FOOD AND SHELTER

Athens-Clarke County Senior Center needs volunteers to pick up items from the Food bank of Northeast Georgia and deliver them to the Senior Center on the 4th Thursday of each month as part of the FEED Site program. Currently the Athens Interfaith Hospitality Network is looking for a few more host churches and folks willing to cook meals, set up rooms, play with children, organize weekend activities or spend the night at the host centers with the guests. The volunteers would work closely with a family to ensure success as homeowners. This would include checking in to make sure the bills are paid on time, encouraging them to straighten out their credit, making sure they are attending homebuyer education classes, helping them to create and follow a budget, and providing general guidance and support to help them become good neighbors. You could make an invaluable impact in the lives of ALT homeowners. A 6 month to a year committment with only 5-10 hours per month is requested . Athens-Clarke County Leisure Services needs volunteer soccer coaches during the spring season. It is for children ages 5-14 years old. Volunteers are also needed to assist in after school programs at three of the department's facilities.
